Last week, I was a guest on Positively Philly showcasing how to repurpose old shipping boxes. They can easily be upcycled into things like the base of a flower arrangement or even a storage container.  Today I’m showing you how I turned an old cardboard box into this DIY flower arrangement for fall. You may also love this Easy DIY Planter Box.

Why you’ll love this project

  • Saves Money:  If I went out and bought a new base for all of my DIY flower arrangement ideas, I would be spending a lot of money. Upcycling the shipping boxes I already have in my house saves me money.
  • Quick and Easy: This DIY fall floral arrangement consists of just a few materials that you probably already have in your house. This Storybook Backdrop Party Prop is another really easy DIY project you could try.
  • Beginner Friendly: Like most of my DIY projects, this project is beginner friendly.
  • Customizable: This cardboard box upcycle is not only a money saver, but you can customize it to go with the style of your home or match the DIY flower arrangements you make.
  • Versatile: Depending on the size of box you have, you could make anything from a huge floral display for the middle of your kitchen island, to a few itty bitty ones for table centerpieces during the holidays. The options are endless.

Looking to become a next level DIY’er? Then you will definitely want to make sure you have these beginner tools.

Why I’m doing this project

I really wanted to do a few posts on how you can upcycle the cardboard boxes in your home. I know I have so many, and I know others do too. So instead of throwing them away or recycling them, I thought it would be fun to find ways of upcycling them and using them for DIY projects.

Variations/ Adaptations

When you are finished using the upcycled box for your DIY fall flower arrangements, you can reuse that box even further as the following:

  • Use it as a magazine or file holder
  • Remote control holder
  • Mail and key drop zone
  • Bathroom organizer
  • Charging Station
  • Desk organizer
  • Snack box

1. Tuck in or cut the flaps of your box.

2. Use spray glue on outside of box to attach fabric.

3. Cut excess fabric from top (if needed), spray glue inside box then tuck in fabric.

4. Add trim (optional) using hot glue gun.

Tips

  • Make sure you use fabric that’s pliable/bends easily. Don’t use fabric thats too thick because it may be difficult for the spray glue to hold it down.

FAQ

What are some other ways I can upcycle cardboard boxes?

Instead of covering them with fabric, use peel & stick wallpaper. You can also decoupage the box. If you don’t want to make a flower arrangement, try using them to create more storage in your home for books or magazines, or to organize kitchen utensils in deep drawers.

Could I use fresh flowers in this arrangement?

Yes, but you would have to put your flowers in a container with water or wet foam that won’t leak before sitting it in box.
