With a few simple materials, you can build this Sephora themed DIY backdrop for photo ops at your next kid’s birthday party for a fun, festive way all your guests can remember just how great the party was!

Why you’ll love this project

  • Quick and easy:  This simple photo prop project took me just a day to complete.
  • Lightweight:  I normally make my party props out of wood, but this time decided to use something lighter…foam board.
  • Beginner Friendly:  This super easy diy photo backdrop is perfect for beginners with minimal tools needed and simple instructions to follow.
  • Inexpensive:  Because I am using inexpensive foam board for this party background, I don’t feel guilty about using it only once.

Why I’m doing this project

My twin girls are turning 11 and of course like most girls their age, they are totally into skincare and makeup! They love Sephora so I decided to give them a Sephora themed birthday party.

Now I normally build party props with wood but this time I decided to use foam. What I love about foam is that it’s easy to cut and work with. It’s also relatively inexpensive. My goal was to use the least amount of materials for this project so I only ended up buying 2 pieces of 4×8 foam sheets.

I kinda rushed getting this project done so I made a few mistakes but I’ll explain what I should have done to make it better.

This is the perfect photo booth prop for a makeup party.

MATERIALS:

  • Foamular – 1 – 4×8 sheet at 2 inch thick ($59) & 1 – 4×8 sheet at 1/2 inch thick ($22)
  • Razor Blade/utility knife to cut foam
  • Gorilla Glue – Gorilla Glue is actually what holds my projects together whether I am using wood, foam board, or any other material. It is always reliable.
  • Heavy Duty Velcro– This particular velcro was perfect for this project because it was inexpensive but has great hold.
  • 6 packs of streamers (Order 3 packs – 2 come in each pack) – This brand of streamers comes in about 12 different colors, plus it had the perfect pink for this Sephora backdrop.
  • Paint & rollers/brushes (Black & White)
  • Painters Tape
  • Cricut cutting machine (to make sign)

Cut List

  • Cut the 2 pieces of your 2 inch thick foam to 24×66 inches each) These are for the sides.
  • Cut 1 piece of 1/2 inch thick foam to 15×60 inches for the banner
  • Cut 2 pieces of 1/2 inch thick foam to 10×60 inches for your back piece*
  • Cut 2 pieces of 1/2 inch thick foam to 10×66 inches each.

How to Build a DIY Backdrop

  1. Cut all your panels from the foam board following the cut list above (Images 1 and 2).
  2. Paint your 2 side panels black on both sides and paint your banner for the Sephora logo black or white. (I was rushing and painted mine white accidentally. Technically, to look more like the actual Sephora sign it should be a black background and white letters) (24×66 inches) (Image 2).

3. Use your painters tape and paint alternating stripes on both 10×66 inch pieces (Image 3).

4. Once your painting is done, grab 1 of your support pieces (24×66″)and use your spray Gorilla glue to spray glue on the edge of one side of it. Then spray glue along the edge of the striped piece (10×66″) and attach them together as shown below. Repeat process for the other support frame (Image 4)

5. Now it’s time to add the back support. Grab your 2 – 10x 60″ strips and used Gorilla glue to glue them together directly on top of each other. We’re doing this to give this piece more firmness. Once dry, attach it to the back of the 2 – L shaped support pieces you just created as shown below. I used Gorilla glue to affix it but found that it wasn’t sticking as good and I was in a bit of a rush. I actually drilled a long screw in it which seemed to actually help keep it together. But if I were to do this again, I’d use heavy duty velcro tabs. The tabs would have just made the project a lot easier and are listed above in the materials section (Image 5).

6. Last, it’s time to make your SEPHORA banner for the front. You’ll need a cutting machine of some sort to make this. The closest font I found to the SEPHORA brand font is Gill Sans. I printed the sign and attached it to the middle (Image 6).

7. Once you’ve added the logo, you will use strips of heavy duty velcro to attach it to the front and you’re done! (Image 7)

Tips for the best result

  • Now here’s one thing you can try especially if you want your stand to be more sturdy. Instead of doing a strip on the back side like i did, you could invest in another sheet of foam and add a full sheet on the back Instead. The thicker the foam you use, the more stable it will be.
  • Get your supplies fast by ordering online at Home Depot and doing a quick pickup or ordering your materials on Amazon to have them shipped directly to you.

Absolutely!  Just use the same directions as stated above but use wood instead or foamboard.

Birthday Photo Backdrop Success!

This easy diy photo backdrop was a hit at the party! Not only did my twin girls love getting their pics taken in front of it, but so did all their friends!

I also made a large scale makeup compact prop. I’ll be adding that tutorial to the blog as well!
