DIY Mobile Partition for Virtual School

I know a lot of your children have already started school, but our girls (who are now 1st graders) don’t start until Monday (3 days away…yikes!). I’ve been kinda dragging my feet getting their space set up in our home but I’m finally getting it done.

We decided to set them up in our living room. It’s the room with the most natural light and “free” space. I made them desks which I’ll post about later but wanted to create a divider of some sort so they aren’t distracted by each other. I decided to make a mobile partition. This project is pretty easy to do and you don’t need any tool outside a drill. It will require you to have cuts done at Home Depot or Lower though if you don’t own a Miter saw.

MATERIALS
1 – 4’x8′ sheet of wood – 3/4 inch thick (I used pine)
2 – 2x4s @ 6 ft
4 – wheels with locks
2 1/2 inch screws
Wood Glue
Drill
*Kreg Jig (I used a Kreg Jig to assemble the frame but you can also assemble with screws so if you don’t have one, it’s no problem. If you have one, use it.)

CUT LIST
3’x5′ cut out of your 4×8 sheet of wood (BOARD)
3- 36 inch cuts out of your 2x4s (FRAME)
2 -16 inch cuts out of your 2x4s (FEET)
(Using your miter saw, cut the ends of feet in 45 degree angles – not mandatory)

Once you have all your cuts down, you are ready to assemble!

STEP 1
Assemble your frame using your 3 – 36 inch pieces of 2x4s. Initially, I made mine too wide but here is a picture to give you an idea.

You are basically creating a U. Use a little wood glue and 2 screws on each end to attach to each other. If you have a Kreg Jig, use that to assemble your U frame.

TIP: Don’t screw one of the sides in super tight…. this will give you the allowance you need to slide the 3’x5′ board in between the U frame.

STEP 2

Paint the board. I used pink for one side and purple for the other but of course you are free to paint yours however you’d like.

STEP 3

Once the board dries, place it in between the U frame.

Once it’s centered, use your screws to carefully drill 2 screws in (one towards the top and one closer to the bottom.

STEP 4

Attach feet. Originally, I made 3 feet but then decided to add wheels so I took the middle off. Attach feet using 2 screws, then attach 2 wheels to each of the feet.
